1994: MSc. University of Innsbruck (Title: Effects of artificial food on the tryptic activity of fish larvae)

1997: Ph.D. University of Innsbruck (Title: Studies on the metal contamination of Arctic char (Salvelinus alpinus) from oligotrophic high mountain lakes (Tyrol, Austria)

RESEARCH AND PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITIES

I have been involved for many years (from 1987 – 2004) in numerous environmental toxicology-related research projects. All these projects were carried out in my position as research scientist and lecturer at the Institute of Zoology and Limnology of the University of Innsbruck.

My research activities include

  • effects of metals on aquatic ecosystems
  • environmental physiology and ecotoxicology of freshwater fish
  • fish as indicators of environmental pollution
  • aquatic invertebrates as bioindicators of metal contamination of aquatic ecosystems
  • Climate change in Alpine and Arctic regions

Since 2004 I am the project coordinator of the international research programmes of the Austrian Academy of Sciences. (including UNESCO programmes such as MAB, IHP and IGGP).

TEACHING AND OTHER SCIENTIFIC ACTIVITIES

Starting in 1995 I held numerous student courses and lectures in the fields Marine Biology, Biomonitoring, Ecotoxicology, Heavy metal contamination of freshwater systems and Atomic absorption spectroscopy at the University of Innsbruck.

AWARDS AND GRANTS

Starting from the year 1995 I have received numerous grants (e.g. from Federal Ministry of Science, Austrian National Bank Science Fund, Government of Tyrol) for research activities in Canada.

In the year 2000 I received the Canadian Studies Award of the University of Innsbruck.

In 2010 I was awarded the „Silberner Hahn“ and „Goldener Hahn“ for the book „Planet Austria“ as best Public Relation project.

In 2010, the Canadian Government recognized my exceptional contributions to Canada-Austria relations by awarding me the Canadian “Go for Gold” honorary medal.

In 2013 my MAB project “Vielfalt genießen/Enjoying diversity”. was designated Official Austrian UN Project of the Decade of Education for Sustainable Development 2005 – 2014 for its continued commitment in the field of education for sustainable development.
