GALPIS-Web is an interactive web-based map of Austria with a comprehensive interdisciplinary database on land use, settlements, population, tourism, agriculture, ecology and biodiversity for all Austrian municipalities. This web GIS serves as an instrument that goes beyond producing preinstalled maps on the internet and enables the user to control the content, form of presentation, the use of colour as well as the depth of the data used to create the map. It consists of a database with 1173 attributes. A special software relates them to spatial units, in this case the 2354 Austrian municipalities, and presents them as interactive maps on the internet. GALPIS-Web allows anybody to carry out scientific analyses swiftly and to display them in a meaningful cartographic representation based on a free choice of form and content.
