The long-term monitoring and research programme GLORIA captures and assesses biodiversity change (global change, esp. climate change) caused by humans in high-mountain ecosystems. The scientific lead and coordination is based in Austria (ÖAW-IGF, BOKU-ZgWN), the network of monitoring stations is spread across c. 130 mountain regions on six continents. GLORIA is the only internationally standardized biodiversity monitoring programme in mountains based on permanent observation areas. Quality-controlled continuation and expansion of this essential research programme into the effects of climate change on the ecology is highly relevant and will become even more important in the coming years and decades.
