Der Botaniker und Ökologe Georg Grabherr (66) ist Österreichs "Wissenschafter des Jahres 2012". Dazu wurde der stellvertretende Direktor des Instituts für Interdisziplinäre Gebirgsforschung der Akademie der Wissenschaften (ÖAW) und ehemalige Naturschutzprofessor an der Uni Wien von den Mitgliedern des Klubs der Bildungs- und Wissenschaftsjournalisten gewählt.
Die vielfältigen Lebens- und Arbeitsverhältnisse, Rollen und Leistungen von Frauen in ländlichen Regionen stehen selten im Blickpunkt der Öffentlichkeit – deshalb diese Tagung! In wissenschaftlichen Vorträgen, Praxisforen und Podiumsdiskussionen sollen die vorhandenen und zu erschließenden Potentiale von Frauen in ländlichen Regionen im Mittelpunkt stehen und der Austausch zwischen Forschung und Praxis angeregt werden.

In der Akademieratssitzung vom 31.10.2012 wurde die Entfristung des IGF beschlossen und so eine dauerhafte Basis für die Arbeit des Instituts geschaffen. Damit einher geht, wie im Entwicklungsplan der Akademie vorgesehen, eine Umbenennung des Instituts, die den interdisziplinären Charakter unserer Forschungsvorhaben deutlicher sichtbar macht. Das IGF (die Abkürzung bleibt unverändert) heißt ab sofort: Institut für Interdisziplinäre Gebirgsforschung. Das IGF-Team freut sich sehr über diesen Beschluss und die darin ausgedrückte Wertschätzung seiner Arbeit.
In its meeting on 31 October 2012 the Academy Council passed a resolution to grant the continuation of the institute for an unlimited period of time, thus creating a permanent basis for the work of the IGF. This decision goes hand in hand with a renaming of the institute as envisaged in the Academy’s development plan. To communicate more clearly the interdisciplinary character of the research at the IGF (the abbreviation remains unchanged), the institute is now called: Institute for Interdisciplinary Mountain Research. The whole IGF team welcomes this decision and the appreciation of its work expressed therein.
COST Action IS1007 – Investigating Cultural Sustainability
22–24 October, Innsbruck, Austria

The first and second meeting dealt with the concepts of culture, and the role of policy. In this third meeting of the COST Action IS1007, we will focus on how to assess the role and meaning of culture within the framework of sustainable development. In addition, work on the various forms of outputs, publications, curriculums, and research plans will be launched. The workshop is addressed primarily at the Action participants.

It is with great pride that we announce that eco.mont has just been admitted into the prestigious Thomson Index (Web of Science), with retroactive inclusion of all past issues (back to issue 1 in June 2009).
The periodical was created by common accord between ALPARC, ISCAR (International scientific committee on research in the Alps), the Austrian Academy of Sciences (ÖAW) and the University of Innsbruck. The ISCAR-P work group covering research in protected spaces constitutes the editorial committee of eco.mont.
eco.mont publishes new scientific articles submitted to a peer review process, reports on administrative matters and other subjects of interest for the protected areas, and in each issue focuses on a protected area as a case in point. The periodical is published in English to reach as wide a public as possible.
